Lenovo Yoga Battery Replacement

From the Yoga 500 up through the Yoga 9 and the ThinkPad X1 Yoga: twelve battery packs each associated with a named model.

Lenovo have used the Yoga name on a whole host of laptops and the batteries in them aren't all interchangeable. Our range runs from 30Wh to 75Wh and from 7.4V to 15.52V. Each card will tell you exactly which Yoga models and Lenovo part numbers it's for so you can cross that against your own laptop first. Everything in this table comes from the twelve product listings. A Yoga that is absent here is simply not named in any listing; the filter is not hiding it. Still no match? The WhatsApp button near the foot of the page reaches us.

One Yoga Name, Many Batteries

The fit notes on the listings show how the 12 packs break down. Start with the group that your Yoga falls into.

Yoga 7i, Yoga 9 and Yoga Slim

Three lines, three listings. The L19M4PDC (71Wh) names the Yoga 7 14ITL5, 15ITL5, 14ACN6 and 14ARB7. The L21C4PH0 (75Wh) names the Yoga 9 14IAP7 and 14IRP8. The L22M4PF0 (60Wh) covers six Yoga Slim 6 and 7 models. The 7i listing adds that the Yoga 9i uses a different battery.

Yoga 500, 530, 920, C740 and Gen 4

These five listings show the widest spread in specs: 7.4V and 30Wh for the Yoga 500, 7.68V and 70Wh for the Yoga 920, and around 11V for the 530, C740 and Gen 4. For the 530 and C740, a listing quotes two values for one spec, so read the notes in the finder first.

ThinkPad X1 Yoga and L13 Yoga

Here the pack follows the generation: the L17M4P71 for the X1 Yoga 3rd Gen, the L18C4P71 for the 4th Gen and the L20C4P71 for the 6th and 7th Gen. The L18D4P90 is for the L13 Yoga. The 3rd and 4th Gen listings each say they will not fit other generations.

Another Yoga, or a generation that is not listed?

You shouldn't borrow a neighbour's battery since the listing for the 7i states that the Yoga 6 and Yoga 9i require different batteries. The X1 Yoga 5th Gen is mentioned only in the specification table of the L18C4P71 listing, while the 8th Gen is listed only in the title of the L20C4P71 listing, therefore the fit lists cannot verify either of these. Send us your exact model and we will check it, or look through the full Lenovo range.

Three Steps to the Right Yoga Battery

1

Get the full model name

“Yoga” is a family, not a model. You need the whole name, such as Yoga 7-14ITL5 or X1 Yoga 4th Gen, and ideally the machine type such as 82BH or 20R5, which several listings give in brackets. Lenovo's help page on finding a serial number or product name lists three routes: Detect my product, Lenovo Vantage, or the label on the laptop.

2

Compare the part number

The battery codes in our listings are something like L19M4PDC, with 5B10 or SB10 numbers next to them. In the case of a Yoga laptop with an internal battery, you have to open the laptop in order to read the old label, so it's sufficient just to use the model and the type of machine to narrow down the choices. Our part number guide shows how to confirm with the label.

3

Check volts and watt-hours

Voltage is a useful first filter. The packs fall into three bands really: circa 7.4 to 7.7V (Yoga 500, Yoga 920), circa 11V (530, C740, Gen 4) and 15.36V and above (Yoga 7i, Yoga 9, Slim and the ThinkPad Yogas). If they're in a different band then stop and ask. Wh not mAh.

Three Checks Before You Order

A fresh pack cannot undo a charge limit, a hot room or a damaged cell, so rule these out before you spend anything.

Is a charge cap switched on?

Open Lenovo Vantage and look at Conservation Mode and, on some versions, Battery Threshold. A Yoga held at 75 to 80% is doing what it was set to do. The questions below explain how the settings work.

Is it too hot or too cold?

Lenovo says to charge only between 10°C and 35°C (50 to 95°F), and its Yoga 9i guide notes that Vantage shows the battery temperature. If the laptop has been in a hot car or a cold bag, let it return to room temperature before you judge the battery.

Is the pack swollen?

Press the trackpad, then rock the closed laptop gently on a flat table. If the pad lifts, the case bulges or the base wobbles, stop using it: shut it down, pull the charger and leave it uncharged until a professional has replaced the pack. Our swollen battery guide lists the immediate steps.

Swapping a Yoga Battery: What the Job Involves

Several of our Yoga listings describe the pack as internal and recommend a qualified technician, so plan for a screwdriver rather than a latch. Not sure how hard yours will be? The built-in vs removable guide grades the different designs.

1

Power down fully

A sleeping Yoga is still live, so shut it down and take out the charger. On ThinkPad Yogas, iFixit's X390 Yoga guide also has you disable the built-in battery in BIOS setup first.

2

Open the base

Remove every base screw, including any under rubber feet, then work the cover loose gently, going round the edge instead of prying at one point.

3

Unplug, unscrew, swap

Unplug the battery cable before anything else, undo the pack's own screws and lift it clear. Drop the new pack in, then press the cable home. If a Slim 6/7 laptop cannot see the battery afterwards, our listing points to the cable as the thing to check.

4

Refit and charge

Close the cover, replace the screws and give the Yoga a full charge. Its percentage may wander until it has run two or three complete cycles, and the setup guide explains the first-charge routine.

iFixit rates both of its guides Easy, at 15 to 20 minutes for the C940 and 15 to 25 for the X390 Yoga. Our complete replacement guide goes deeper on safety.

Lenovo Yoga Battery Replacement: Questions People Ask

Can the battery on a Lenovo Yoga be replaced?

Yes. The real question is who does the work, and there are three routes. If the Yoga is still covered, start with Lenovo: its sealed battery warranty sheet gives a one-year base battery warranty that an extension can stretch to three, and a built-in diagnostic that rates a battery Good, Fair or Poor, with Poor eligible for warranty replacement. Cover depends on your model and where you bought it. After that, a repair shop or a Lenovo service center can fit a pack; Lenovo defines a sealed battery as an integrated, non-CRU part, so that work belongs with a repair center or a trained technician. The third route is fitting it yourself on models where the pack is screwed in, as the answer on ease explains. Whoever does it, the pack has to match your exact model, and the finder above is the quickest way to check.

How much does it cost to replace a Lenovo Yoga battery?

The pack itself costs $32.99 to $79.99 across our twelve Yoga listings. The Yoga 530 pack is $32.99. The Yoga Gen 4, Yoga 920, Yoga C740 and X1 Yoga 6th and 7th Gen packs are $49.99, and the Yoga 500, Yoga 9 and X1 Yoga 3rd and 4th Gen packs are $59.99. The Yoga 7i is $65.99, the L13 Yoga $78.99 and the Yoga Slim 6/7 $79.99. Fitting is extra unless you do it yourself, and the total with labour is covered in the answer on Lenovo battery costs below.

Is it worth replacing a battery in a laptop?

Judge the pack against the whole laptop. Our cost guide says to replace the battery if it costs under 30% of a comparable new laptop, and to think about upgrading if it costs more and the laptop is over five years old. Try it with the prices on this page: at 30%, our dearest Yoga pack ($79.99) passes against any new laptop priced above about $267, and the cheapest ($32.99) against any above about $110. The rule says nothing about the rest of the machine. A new pack brings back runtime but will not cure a failing screen, keyboard or drive, so weigh those before you spend.

How long should a Lenovo Yoga battery last?

That depends on which clock you mean. Hours per charge scale with capacity, and our Yoga packs run from 30Wh to 75Wh, so a 75Wh Yoga 9 pack holds two and a half times the energy of the 30Wh Yoga 500 pack. Real hours also depend on the screen, the workload and the power mode: Lenovo's Yoga 7 2-in-1 guide lets you switch between High Performance, Auto and Power Saving modes in Vantage or PC Manager, or with Fn + Q, and describes Power Saving (Quiet) as meant for battery use or quiet running. We cannot give one honest hours figure for every Yoga, so use the runtime rated for your model as the benchmark. For years per pack, see the lifespan answer below.

How do I know if my Lenovo battery is bad?

Rule out settings first, then read the symptoms. A Yoga that stops at 75 to 80% may just have Conservation Mode on, which Lenovo's Yoga 9i guide says holds the charge in that band, and Lenovo adds that after a full charge the battery must fall to 94% or lower before it recharges. Real wear looks different. Lenovo's battery glossary lists decreased battery life, slow charging, overheating and swelling. Our lifespan guide adds runtime under two hours, sudden shutdowns, a laptop that only runs on AC power, and a Windows battery report (powercfg /batteryreport) showing under 70% health, which is Full Charge Capacity divided by Design Capacity. It reads 80 to 100% as normal ageing and below 60% as significant loss. Lenovo's own diagnostic grades a battery Good, Fair or Poor, and Poor means capacity is lower than normal for its age or cycle count. A bulging case or a lifting trackpad means stop and have the pack replaced.

How much does it cost to replace a Lenovo battery?

The total depends on who fits it. Our cost guide, which uses general laptop figures rather than Lenovo quotes, sets out three routes. The cheapest is doing it yourself: roughly $40 to $135 in total for an internal screw-mounted pack, with about $15 of that spent once on tools. Next comes an independent shop at roughly $70 to $200, of which labour is $40 to $80. An authorized service center is the dearest at roughly $130 to $440, and it fits OEM batteries only. For Lenovo's own price, ask Lenovo or your service center. Our Yoga packs start at $32.99 on this page, and the wider Lenovo range is in the Lenovo battery collection.

Is it easy to replace Lenovo laptop battery?

On many models it is a moderate job rather than a one-minute swap. Our built-in vs removable guide rates IdeaPads and newer ThinkPads as medium: an internal, screw-mounted pack that typically takes 15 to 45 minutes with a Phillips #0 screwdriver and a plastic spudger. It does not rate any Yoga, so look at iFixit. Its Yoga C940-14IIL guide is Easy at 15 to 20 minutes, with seven lower-case screws (three under a rubber foot), four screws on the battery (one hidden) and the ribbon cable unplugged before the pack comes out; it also needs a T5 Torx. Its ThinkPad X390 Yoga guide is Easy at 15 to 25 minutes, and starts with the adapter unplugged and the built-in battery disabled in BIOS setup. Neither laptop is in our range, and our listings for the X1 Yoga 3rd Gen, Yoga 7i and Yoga 500 recommend professional installation, so check a guide for your exact model first.

What is the typical lifespan of a Lenovo laptop battery?

Lenovo's glossary puts it at 2 to 5 years or 300 to 500 charge cycles on average, depending on usage, applications and power settings. Our lifespan guide splits that by use: heavy users 18 to 24 months, moderate users 2 to 3 years and light users 3 to 5 years, with capacity typically around 80% of new by 300 to 500 cycles. It names heat above 35°C (95°F) as a lifespan killer, which lines up with Lenovo's advice to charge between 10°C and 35°C, and it notes that a pack left in a drawer still loses capacity. The base battery warranty on Lenovo's sealed batteries is one year, so most packs will outlive their cover.

Can Lenovo battery be replaced?

Yes, and how it works depends on the laptop. Lenovo's glossary says that in most cases you can replace the battery yourself, though some laptops need special tools or skills. Our built-in vs removable guide sorts Lenovo into two groups: ThinkPads up to the T480 have external PowerBridge batteries that swap in about 30 seconds, while IdeaPads, Legion and newer ThinkPads have internal screw-mounted packs. Lenovo's sealed battery sheet draws the same line, covering internal sealed batteries on eligible ThinkPad notebooks and tablets and requiring a separate extension for an external one. Flip the laptop over: a release latch means the battery is external. On ThinkPads, our cost guide also warns that many models check the battery through firmware, so a replacement has to pass the ThinkPad firmware check. Our OEM vs aftermarket guide covers the trade-offs.
